- A UPI ID (India) — the QR code encodes a standard UPI payment link, so apps like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm can scan it and prefill the amount automatically. This only works for INR payments, since UPI is an India-specific payment rail.
- Any custom link or text — a PayPal.me link, a Venmo handle, wire transfer instructions, or anything else you'd otherwise type out by hand. The QR code just encodes whatever text you give it.
Why generate it locally instead of using a QR API
Many free "QR generator" tools work by sending your text or payment link to their own server to build the image, which means your payment details briefly pass through someone else's system. Generating the QR code with a local JavaScript library instead means the encoding happens entirely on your device — the data never leaves your browser to produce the code.
Works on printed invoices too
A QR code prints just like any other part of the invoice, so it works even for paper invoices handed over in person — useful for cash-on-delivery work where you still want to offer a digital payment option.
Frequently asked questions
Does the QR code work for any currency?
A UPI QR code only works for INR. For any other currency, use the custom link/text option with a payment link from a service that supports your currency (PayPal, Wise, a bank transfer note, etc).
Can I disable the QR code for some invoices?
Yes — it's an optional toggle, so you can leave it off entirely for invoices where a QR code doesn't make sense.
