International Invoice Template (20 Currencies)
Billing across borders adds a few extra questions a domestic invoice doesn't need to answer — which currency, who eats a currency conversion, and how payment actually arrives. Here's what to settle upfront.
Build your invoice now
Invoshi supports 20 currencies with correct symbols and formatting for each — pick the one your client actually pays in.
Create a free invoice →Decide the currency before you invoice, not after
Invoicing in your own currency shifts the exchange-rate risk to the client; invoicing in theirs shifts it to you. Neither is automatically wrong, but it should be agreed before the invoice is sent — a currency mismatch discovered after the fact is a common source of payment disputes and delays.
What to add beyond the usual fields
- Your country in the business address — easy to forget when you're used to omitting it for local clients.
- Bank details formatted for international transfer — an IBAN/SWIFT code where relevant, since a domestic account/ routing number alone often can't receive an international wire.
- Who covers transfer fees — banks often deduct a fee from an international transfer, which can leave you receiving slightly less than invoiced if this isn't clarified in advance.
Payment terms for new international clients
Cross-border payment disputes are harder to chase up than local ones, so many freelancers ask for an advance or Cash in Advance (CIA) term on a first international engagement, moving to standard Net terms once there's a payment history. See the payment terms guide for what each option actually means.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to charge sales tax/VAT on an international invoice?
This depends heavily on both your location and your client's — cross-border tax rules vary too much to generalize. Check with a local accountant familiar with international sales before assuming either way.
Should the amount be rounded for currency conversion?
Generally no — invoice the exact agreed amount in the agreed currency, and let the conversion happen on the paying or receiving end through the bank or payment processor, rather than pre-adjusting the number yourself.
